How-to: Software & Hardware Hard Reset Your Motorola Droid

by · January 6, 2012

Without a doubt, the Motorola Droid is one of the most famous smartphones that Motorola has manufactured. If you are using this phone, you probably know that you will need to perform a hard reset so you can clean it and make it work faster with a better response time. This is unfortunately, one of the biggest issues of the Droid as there are many who feel their device is taking a while to respond to their tasks. In order to make your phone respond more quickly to you, you will need to erase everything on your device. Apart from removing clutter, the performance of your Droid will be as fast as the time you originally bought it.

However, you have to keep in mind that you will only need to clean up your Droid if you are selling your phone or having a service center fix it. This is so your personal files will not be in danger under the hands of strangers.

Before discussing the steps on how you can perform a hard reset on your phone, it is important to note that there are two methods you can follow: software and hardware reset.

Software Reset

If you need an easy way to reset your Android phone, you can follow the software reset method. Here is the process:

  • Go to Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset

This will erase all of the data found in your phone’s internal memory including downloaded Android Market apps, application data, Google Account, and system files.

  • Choose Format USB Storage > Reset Phone > Erase Everything

Take note that once you tap on this, everything will be deleted. You will no longer be able to recover anything from your phone so be sure that you have made a backup copy of your files.

Your phone will now automatically restart itself. When it switches itself on, it will ask you to setup your Google Account as well as other settings which you also went through the first time you activated your phone.

Your second option is to do a hardware hard reset on your Motorola Droid.

Hardware Reset

  • Switch off your phone and take out the battery. After a few seconds, insert it again.
  • Open your phone’s keyboard and hold down the x key. Simultaneously, press the power button. Keep holding these two buttons until a yellow triangle appears on your screen. This means that your phone is undergoing its recovery mode.
  • Press both the Camera and Volume Up button at the same time. This will lead you to the menu options. If you don’t reach this point, just keep retrying the step.
  • Using the direction pad of your phone, make a selection on the available options on the menu before clicking on the Format option.
