iOS 5: How to Set and Create Custom Vibrations

by · January 3, 2012

If you’ve always been interested in setting up some custom vibrations on your iOS 5, here’s a really easy to follow how-to guide. What’s more is that you can choose to use one of the pre-built in vibrations on your iOS device, or even make one up. Unless you haven’t discovered it yet, the five preloaded vibrations on your iOS include the following options:

  • Alert (a long vibration you experience when you have an incoming phone call)
  • Rapid (a fast-paced yet light vibration)
  • Heartbeat (similar to a heartbeat’s pulse)
  • Symphony (similar to a song beat)
  • S.O.S. (similar to a Morse code vibration indicating S.O.S.)

Once you have chosen the vibration you prefer, it will set itself as the vibration you’ll receive to every phone call. In order to enable custom vibrations, just follow these steps:

1. Gain access to the new interface by enabling it. This can be done by following the image posted below. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility. Once there, switch on Custom Vibrations. After you have switched this on, you will need to return to the main screen of your Settings app.

2. Locate the interface. On the main screen of your Settings app, tap on Sounds > Vibration > Create New Vibration. This will lead you to the interface where you can customize vibrations.

3. Once you have reached this interface, you will simply have to follow the instructions that say: ‘Tap to create a vibration pattern.’ Every time you feel like you want to add a vibration, you can just tap on the screen.

On top of the Play button, you will see a picture indicating what your customized vibration looks like. The dark portions represent vibrate while lighter portions mean pause. Whenever you tap your screen, you will see a liquid-ish vibration that notifies you that your phone has recorded the message you wanted to relay.

4. To playback the vibration you have created, simply tap on the Play button.

5. If you’re happy with the vibration you created, just save it by tapping the Record button. Normally, this will take a minute.

If you’ve used this feature already, let us know what you think. Or better yet, share your customized vibrations. We’d love to hear them!
